ISTC’s Institutional Water Treatment (IWT) services group provides objective water treatment advice to facilities equipped with institutional water systems, including cooling towers, chillers, and boilers. Active since 1949, we help clients safeguard public health while significantly reducing their annual chemical, energy, water, and system maintenance expenses.
IWT works with a variety of clients, from private facilities to public utilities.
We assist many state-operated facilities, including the Department of Corrections, Human Services, Secretary of State, Central Management Services, Department of Transportation, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Department of Natural Resources State Lodges, as well as multiple state universities.
Services
IWT services range from providing on-site training and seminars to chemical specifications and recommendations for a comprehensive water treatment program to control corrosion, mineral scale formation, and biological growth. Facilities receive detailed written recommendations and specifications for system design and equipment, treatment equipment, chemicals, and corrosion-resistant materials for use in existing institutional water systems and new construction.
Types of Services
- on-site chemical testing and consulting
- train maintenance personnel on better system management
- identify potential problems in system design and layout
- objective audits of water systems
- professional laboratory analysis of water, corrosion, and deposits
- Legionella pneumophila testing (CDC ELITE Certified Lab)
Fee For Service
IWT clients pay a fee to recover costs associated with routine visits — 3-6 per year, depending on the size and complexity of the facility. These visits are needed to conduct testing, make recommendations, provide consultations, and analyze samples to support system safety and efficiency improvements that help facilities comply with state and federal guidelines for drinking water quality and wastewater discharge.
By the Numbers
During an average year, IWT staff:
- respond to more than 1,000 inquiries.
- provide more than 1,000 detailed laboratory water analysis reports and/or recommendations for action.
- conduct hundreds of site visits to client facilities to evaluate their chemical treatment program, answer questions, help solve emerging problems, and analyze samples.
- analyze more than 2,500 water samples on-site and an additional 800–1000 samples in our state-of-the-art laboratory.
Training
IWT staff members participate in various workshops and conferences, including the annual Illinois Chief Engineers & Facility Managers Training Conference. This conference provides information on pending regulations and water treatment developments relevant to engineering, supervisory, and administrative staff.
